March 07--STAMFORD -- A city firefighter was injured while responding to a house fire on in Shippan early Wednesday morning.
The firefighter received five stitches to his hand when glass got into his glove, said Brendan Keatley, president of the Stamford firefighters' union.
Keatley, who responded to the fire with 25 other firefighters from around the city, said the call came in at 2:09 a.m. When Engine 4 from the Shippan fire house reached the scene at 2:12 a.m. the four family members living in the house at 123 Downs Ave., were in the driveway.
A second floor bedroom on the right side of the single family home was heavily involved in fire, Keatley said.
Firefighters brought two hand lines into the home to extinguish the blaze. The firefighters cleared the scene at 4:44 a.m.
Keatley said the second floor of the home was heavily damaged by fire and the house was posted unfit for occupancy.
Red Cross workers are helping the four residents and a dog and cat to find temporary shelter.
Keatley said firefighters think the blaze started because of electrical issue, but an investigation is ongoing.
The owner of the home told firefighters he had gone to sleep in a chair and woke up to find the fire, Keatley said.
Keatley said although there was a smoke alarm outside one of the bedrooms on the second floor, it was not clear whether the device sounded the alarm.
The firefighter injured in the blaze was treated and released from Stamford Hospital.
