Tanker Rolls, Spills 1,000 Gallons of Heating Oil in Pa.

The roads were still closed Wednesday night as firefighters and a crew from Elk Environmental cleaned up the spill.

Police closed Route 419 and Host Road in Tulpehocken Township on Wednesday afternoon after a tanker truck rolled over and spilled about 1,000 gallons of heating oil onto the road.

The accident occurred about 3:45, and the roads were still closed Wednesday night as firefighters and a crew from Elk Environmental cleaned up the spill. They expected to reopen the road overnight.

No one was injured, according to township police, who gave this account:

Trucker William F. Strunk Jr. of Newmanstown was driving north on Route 419 and was turning left onto Host Road when the tanker truck rolled onto its passenger side.

The tanker was loaded with 7,500 gallons of home heating oil, some of which spilled onto Route 419 and the shoulder of the road.The truck is owned by Countryside Fuel of Womelsdorf.

Police did not know what caused the truck to roll over.

They said they plan to inspect the truck.
