An off-duty Livingston County firefighter most likely saved the life of a man who collapsed after suffering a heart attack at a fundraiser he was attending on Saturday.

Deputy Fire Chief Gregg Schkade was helping make pizzas at the Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake event at the Striking Lane bowling alley when he responded to the calls for help around 4:45 p.m. and initiated CPR, according to The Hartland Patch.

His department soon arrived and the man was transported to University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.

"I wouldn't say I was the hero of the day," Schkade said following the incident. "It was quite a group effort both by some of the patrons who were here and our department. It just happened that I was over here working when it occurred."

The 27-year veteran said part of the reason he's stuck with the job for so long is that it gives him a "great feeling" to help others.

The man Schkade revived is reportedly doing well and recovering.
