March 15--A 70-year-old motorist plunged more than half a dozen feet into a Palo Alto parking garage and landed on top of another car Wednesday, according to a fire department official.

The woman was driving northbound on Birch Street at about 11:18 a.m. when she left the roadway, crossed a planting strip and fell 7 or 8 feet into the second level of the Sheridan Avenue parking garage, said Battalion Chief Chris Woodard.

The car came to a rest with its rear wheels on a brick retaining wall and its nose buried in the windshield of an unoccupied vehicle parked in the garage, according to Woodard. Firefighters secured the woman's car with chains and rope and extricated the driver, who was unhurt.

Damage totals weren't immediately available, but at least one of the vehicles was a total loss, according to Woodard.
