Two mechanics at Monro Muffler, 2187 W. 12th St., suffered burns this afternoon when a gas tank they were removing from a vehicle in a car bay exploded.

Heat and fumes from a torch in an adjacent car bay ignited the explosion, Erie Deputy Fire Chief Marty Heid said.

Firefighters and rescue personnel were sent to the shop at about 3:30 p.m.

One man suffered serious burns to his hands and arms, and another man suffered cuts to his head and arms, Heid said.
