March 28--COLUMBUS -- A loosely closed valve was blamed for an anhydrous ammonia leak early this morning at a business in the 1300 block of Third Avenue.

The Columbus Fire Department's hazardous materials unit was activated at the fire station, but not deployed for the 4:30 a.m. fertilizer gas leak at Central Valley Ag at 1362 Third Ave.

The valve on a small "nurse" tank that can be pulled behind a farm tractor was not closed tightly, Fire Chief Dean Hefti said early this morning.

An employee of Central Valley Ag was called at home and went to the business and secured the fertilizer tank, Hefti said. About a dozen firefighters on the hazardous materials unit responded to the reported leak.
