March 28--Two people, a male and female, were pulled out of the water Tuesday night in a sump in a building at the city of Sacramento's Fairbairn Water Treatment plant on the American River.
Assistant Chief Niko King of the Sacramento Fire Department said the two people, who were not authorized to be on the property, apparently were snooping around the plant and entered a five- or six-story building that rises from water level to the top of the levee.
He said the two climbed down several stories and decided to go swimming in a sump, but then were unable to get out.
King said a passerby on the levee heard someone calling for help and phoned 911. Firefighters initially thought someone was in the river, but then determined the voices were coming from inside the building.
As of 9:45 p.m., no information was available on their physical condition.
