Chicago Fire Officer, Six Others Hurt in Rollover Crash

A Chicago chief driving to a fire call was struck and injured along with six others in a rollover crash overnight at a busy South Side intersection.

A 42-year-old motorist was ticketed in connection to a violent collision at a a busy South Side intersection, where a Fire Department vehicle was struck and rolled over.

The city-owned SUV was being driven by a Chicago Fire Department fire chief driving to a fire call just before 9 p.m. Wednesday when it was struck near 95th Street and Stony Island Avenue, according to authorities and witnesses.

The unnamed chief was headed toward a fire in the 9200 block of Greenwood Avenue when he was struck by a Dodge Caravan driven by Nicole Chaparro, said Officer Amina Greer, a police spokeswoman.

The force of the crash rolled the SUV "a couple of times" before coming to rest, prompting a call for emergency medical services, said Fire Department Chief Joseph Roccasalva.

The collision ensnared three other vehicles, including the striking vehicle.

The chief was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious-to-critical, but stable condition, Roccasalva said.

Four others were taken to nearby Advocate Trinity Hospital , while two other crash victims were taken to South Shore Hospital. All were listed in fair condition, but authorities said it appeared that no one was seriously hurt.

Among the victims were two boys, ages 6 and 10, traveling in Chaparro's vehicle, police said. Chaparro was later cited for for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
