Teen Killed, Firefighter Hurt at Detroit Fire

The body of a young adult was burned beyond recognition and a firefighter fell through a hole burned in the floor of the building on the city's west side this morning.

March 29--One person is is dead and a firefighter was injured early today in a house fire on Detroit's west side.

Neighbors on Washburn near Fenkell and Wyoming said they heard gunshots prior to the fire, which broke out just before 4 a.m. today. Detroit Police homicide and Detroit Fire Department Arson Unit investigators are at the scene.

The victim, who investigators believe is a young adult, was found burned beyond recognition in the basement. Indications are that the person was shot on the first floor and doused with an accelerant. The firefighter was injured after falling into the basement through the hole burned in the floor, according to investigators. He suffered injuries to his back and ribs but is expected to survive.
