March 29--DURHAM -- Firefighters rescued a cat Wednesday from a burning house on Cheek Road and found a second cat on the porch.

Both cats and the occupant escaped unharmed, according to fire officials.

Chief Randy Clements of the Redwood Volunteer Fire Department said firefighters were called to the single-family house at 3518 Cheek Road about 3:12 p.m. He said a room that is attached to the side of the house was on fire.

Durham city firefighters, who also helped fight the blaze, said the woman who lives there said her two cats were inside.

Firefighters from the Bethesda Volunteer Fire Department found one cat on the back porch, and city firefighters rescued the other cat from inside the house.

Clements said most fire damage was confined to one room, and the occupant was not displaced.

He said the cause of the fire was being investigated by the Durham County fire marshal.
