A Fayette County man who police said set fire to pieces of paper in his apartment building is accused of arson.

Fred Mitchell Jr., 21, of 59 Pershing Court, Uniontown, is charged by city police with two counts of arson and one count each of risking a catastrophe, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and harassment.

Police went to Mitchell's apartment at 4:22 a.m. Wednesday for a report he was "trying to burn the house down," Officers noticed an odor of smoke when Mitchell opened the door, according to a police report. He told police he had burned some food, but officers who entered the apartment found singed pieces of paper on the stove and a living room coffee table.

"Mitchell admitted to starting the fires because he was bored," police said in a report.

Police noted there are six other apartments attached to Mitchell's apartment.

Mitchell was arraigned before Uniontown District Judge Michael Metros and placed in the Fayette County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bond. He faces a preliminary hearing 10 a.m. Tuesday before Metros.
