March 29--SACRAMENTO -- The intersection of 10th and O Streets in downtown Sacramento was shut down for several hours after a light rail train collided with two cars.

The accident happened shortly before noon Thursday.

A black BMW was hit first and was pushed into a Toyota Corolla.

The driver of the BMW was rescued after firefighters cut the roof off the top of the car. That driver has moderate injuries, and was alert and talking at the scene to emergency crews.

The driver of the other car had minor injuries and three light rail passengers had moderate injuries. A total of five people were taken to the hospital.

Sacramento Regional Transit says blue and gold lines were affected and were being turned around at 13th and K Streets. Regional Transit is using busses to get passengers around the scene.

The train will be checked for equipment failure and train operators routinely submit to drug tests.

Light rail officials told FOX40 they have had about three accidents over the past four months; which is more often than they would like, but not out of the ordinary.
