March 31-- Several homes were damaged in a fire at a Tulsa apartment complex Friday afternoon.
Fire and heavy smoke were coming from an attic when firefighters arrived at The Villas at Yorktown, in the 4900 block of South Yorktown Avenue, about 2:30 p.m., Tulsa Fire Department spokesman Stan May said.
May said six upper level units were damaged by the blaze and that another six units below sustained water damage. A firewall protected other units in the complex, he said.
One firefighter was taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons with apparent heat-related symptoms, May said. The high temperature in Tulsa on Friday reached the mid-80s.
The firefighter, whose name was not released, was expected to stay in the hospital overnight, May said. The cause of the blaze appeared to be electrical, he said. The fire, which apparently was accidental, evidently began in the top of a heater closet, he said.
None of the residents sustained any apparent injuries, although several tenants were displaced and were assisted by the American Red Cross, he said.
The Red Cross reported that 22 units were affected. Beyond those that were damaged by fire or water, the others in the building were without electricity, the Red Cross said.
Apartment complex officials were also helping the displaced residents find alternate and temporary housing, according to the Red Cross.
