March 31--A fire in an Upper Arlington condominium this morning sent the 84-year-old woman who lives there to the hospital, fire officials said. Her neighbor said she is in critical condition.

Fire crews were called to 4749 Dierker Rd. about 5:45 a.m. When they arrived, they saw that the fire had spread throughout the second floor of one of the units, which included a bedroom and kitchen, said Upper Arlington fire spokesman Dan Kochensparger.

More than 40 firefighters from Upper Arlington and Columbus worked to extinguish the blaze. Rescuers found the woman in the bedroom and transported her to Riverside Methodist Hospital.

Douglass Carr, who lives in the same building, said the woman is Justine Borchers. He said she was in critical condition when he visited her at the hospital this morning. Fire officials could not confirm the woman's identity.

One firefighter who was cut by glass at the fire was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released, Kochensparger said.

The fire began in the kitchen, he said, but investigators don't know what sparked the blaze. Officials assessed the damage at $100,000, mostly limited to the woman's upstairs unit.

Investigators found multiple smoke alarms in the unit but didn't know whether they were functional. Upper Arlington fire officials still are investigating the fire.
