WASHINGTON, D.C. -- An elderly woman is fighting for her life after several people were rescued from a burning house in the 1300 block of Locust Road NW Thursday morning.
The deputy fire chief says one elderly resident who was closest to the fire in a second floor bedroom was unconscious when firefighters arrived shortly after 6:30 a.m. Thursday. Firefighters performed CPR at the scene and then rushed the victim to Medstar. Two others suffered significant smoke inhalation and were also transported to a hospital. They are expected to be okay.
A neighbor told 9News Now that the victims were a mother and her two adult sons. Another neighbor said the mother is in her 90s and was her junior high school history teacher when she went to school.
The blaze was knocked down in about 20 minutes.
A cigarette may have caused the fire, but the fire is still being investigated.
Though the old brick house was nearly destroyed, firefighters say it prevented the blaze from being any worse.
