April 05--Firefighters made two rescues Wednesday after witnesses called to report hikers who appeared to be in trouble on Koko Head.
A man and his two minor children were trying to hike from the top of Koko Crater Trail to Koko Crater Botanical Garden about 2:30 p.m., but got lost and had to hike back up to the ridge, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig.
The mother of the children, who was visiting Halona Blowhole and could see her family from the attraction's parking lot, thought her family was in trouble and called firefighters for help, Seelig said.
Firefighters launched a helicopter and landed on a ridge on Koko Crater to pick up the family, who wanted to hike back down Koko Crater Trail, but were encouraged by firefighters to return with them.
The family, who was visiting from the mainland, was dropped off at Koko Head Regional Park without injuries, Seelig said.
About 4:35 p.m., bystanders called firefighters after seeing a woman slip and fall on Koko Crater Trail. She sustained a minor cut, but never lost consciousness and was able to continue making her way down the trail. Firefighters reached her on the lower part of the trail and escorted her to paramedics waiting at the park, Seelig said.
An Emergency Medical Services supervisor said the woman refused treatment at the scene.
