April 10--FLORENCE, S.C. -- A couple and their two grandchildren were able to safely escape their Skylane Drive home Tuesday morning when it caught fire.

Harold L. Fleming Sr. said he had just settled down to take a nap when he heard a commotion in the house.

"I went to the door to see what the commotion was about. When I opened the door all that heat shot in my face," Fleming said.

He was able to knock out a window and make it out of the house with only some glass cuts.

Grandsons Patrick Lala and Quadail Fleming, with an assist from neighbor Russell Clavon, helped him finish climbing out of the burning home.

Windy Hill firefighters, with mutual aid from Florence firefighters, were able to limit fire damage to less than half the home, though the entire home suffered smoke and heat damage, Windy Hill firefighter Lee Huggins said.

Beyond cuts to Fleming and his grandsons no other injuries were reported, Huggins said.

Firefighters weren't able to determine the fire's cause but Huggins said the fire wasn't suspicious.

The Pee Dee Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to assist the Fleming family.

Florence County EMS and Florence County Sheriff's Office also responded to lend support at the scene.
