Struck Ind. FD Ambulance Crashes Into Church Building

A Decatur Township Fire Department ambulance was responding to call with lights and sirens activated when it was struck by a minivan before crashing into the building.

INDIANAPOLIS -- An ambulance crashed into a church building on Indianapolis' southwest side Thursday morning.

The ambulance was responding to call with lights and sirens activated just before 8:30 a.m. when it was struck by a minivan near Foltz Street and Mooresville Road, fire officials said.

The ambulance left the roadway and crashed into a building next to the First General Baptist Church.

"The ambulance actually went airborne a little bit. and went into the church building," said Decatur Township fire Battalion Chief Paul Ford.

"I was talking on the telephone and I said, 'Oh, something happened,'" said Flossie Houchens, who lives across the street. "I jumped up and looked and the smoke was coming from out there."

Decatur Township Ffirefighter Mike Davis, who was driving the ambulance, and his passenger, Firefighter Brad Davis, were able to climb out of the back of the ambulance.

They were taken to Methodist Hospital in good condition.

The driver of the van, Heather Temple, 36, told firefighters she did not see the stop sign or hear the sirens. She was also taken to Methodist Hospital in good condition.

No one was in the church building at the time.
