SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -- Police are investigating a marijuana cultivation operation that was discovered when firefighters were called to a blaze in a detached garage late Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to an address on the 500 block of Warwick Avenue, near Dutton Avenue, at 4:50 p.m. They found a garage engulfed in flames.

The one-alarm blaze was extinguished in about 15 minutes and it did not spread from the garage, but officials said the structure was a total loss. One firefighter was sent to Eden Medical Center as a precaution because he was experiencing dizziness after a falling timber struck him on the head, said fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles.

Police were called when it was determined that there was a marijuana cultivation operation going on at the site.

They are leading the criminal investigation, but could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.

Firefighters remained at the scene Wednesday evening to make sure the fire does not reignite, Knowles said.
