Quick action by Detroit firefighters spared a local business from being destroyed.

Firefighters battled a blaze tonight in a vacant two-story commercial building on Grand River Ave., near Quincy for over an hour before extinguishing the fire next door to Leo's and Leon Tire and Repair Shop.

After arriving on the scene about 7:45 p.m. firefighters immediately began dousing the fire with water, said Captain Joe English of Engine Co. 34.

"We hit it with some big water and as a result we were able to save the business next door," English said.

Leo's and Leon Tire and Repair Shop next door was spared from any fire damage.

Six fire trucks responded to the scene, including three engines.

Grand River Ave. was closed in both directions in that area. It was expected to be reopened after 9 p.m.

No injuries were involved and the cause of the fire was under investigation, authorities said.
