Two People Killed, One Critical in New York House Fire

Two men were killed and a woman critically injured in a house fire in Mastic late Thursday evening, police said.
Douglas DeSouza, 64, a resident at the home on Broadway, was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where Suffolk County police said he died "despite lifesaving attempts by medical personnel."
Another man, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he also died despite attempts to save him, police said.
A woman, identified by police as Barbara DeSouza, 64, the wife of Douglas DeSouza, was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center in critical condition. Police said she remained in critical condition early Friday morning.
The fire was reported in a 911 call at 11:17 p.m., police said.
Firefighters from the Mastic, Center Moriches and Brookhaven fire departments responded to find the house ablaze but managed to pull the three people from the home.
The cause of the fire has not been determined and remains under investigation by the Suffolk police Homicide Squad and the Arson Squad.
