April 29--CORRALITOS -- Firefighters on Saturday afternoon doused a blaze in the Eureka Canyon area that had burned through about an acre of dense vegetation on extremely steep terrain, after a controlled burn got out of hand, Cal Fire Capt. Jonathan Cox said.
Cal Fire and other agencies responded to a report of fire about 2:40 p.m. and had controlled it by about 6:30 p.m., Cox said.
He said it was caused by an unattended controlled burn on private property with inadequate clearance.
A team of 68 firefighters worked together to extinguish the flames, Cox said. Agencies that assisted included Cal Fire, county companies from Corralitos and Loma Prieta, Watsonville Fire and Aptos-La Selva and Central Fire Protection Districts.
The risk of open burning will increase as conditions become warmer and drier, he said, and the open burning season closes Monday in all county areas controlled by Cal Fire.
Failure to follow burning regulations can result in citation and liability of complete suppression response, Cox said.
