Two dogs died and a firefighter was injured in a house fire Tuesday in Oxnard.

Two dogs died and a firefighter was injured in a house fire Tuesday in Oxnard, officials said.

The blaze was reported about 5 p.m. in the 1000 block of West Iris Street and was knocked down by 5:20 p.m. said Oxnard Fire Battalion Chief John Colamarino.

The fire damaged two bedrooms and caused extensive smoke damage to the house, causing it to be deemed uninhabitable, Colamarino said.

Four people were displaced, and a Chihuahua and a pit bull were killed, Colamarino said.

A man was home at the time of the fire but escaped without injuries. He was apparently intoxicated and later detained after he tried going back inside to rescue the dogs, Colamarino said.

A firefighter suffered a minor burn, was treated at the scene and returned to duty.

The fire caused an estimated $150,000 in structural damage and $50,000 damage to contents. The cause was undetermined, Colamarino said.
