The 6-year-old boy rescued from a house fire Tuesday died at the hospital Thursday, joining his mother who was also killed in the blaze, authorities said.

Fire crews had tried to resuscitate the boy after the early-morning fire in South San Jose and took him to Valley Medical Center. The boy was in a fight for his life that ended Thursday.

His mother, who was in her 50s, died at the scene of the blaze after firefighters also pulled her out of the home.

The father of the boy, who is in his 50s, was badly injured but survived, while his brother, 12, was hurt but in good condition. Three other family members lived in the unit and were not badly hurt.

None of the family members had been identified Thursday.

San Jose firefighters kicked down the doors of the apartment on Warfield Way at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday after the garage fire on the ground floor spread upward to the living quarters on the second floor. Immediately, neighbors and some of the seven family members living in the townhome began screaming at firefighters to save the people trapped inside.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire on the second floor. They used a ladder to help rescue some of the family members.

Dozens of firefighters responded to the three-alarm blaze on a winding street home to a series of four-unit condo buildings. The home was badly damaged, displacing the remaining members of the family. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The family members were the first people to die in a fire in San Jose in at least a year.
