A 62-year-old man was pronounced dead at Toledo Hospital Monday despite firefighters' attempts to save him by performing CPR after pulling him from a burning house, said Toledo fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld.

Fire crews were dispatched at 10:01 a.m. to the West Toledo home, 1812 Welker Ave., where they found a detached garage and later the back of the one-story house on fire.

A Toledo police incident report indicated the fire, according to fire investigators, appeared intentionally set, possibly as a suicide attempt. Authorities had not identified the victim as of late Monday, pending an autopsy.

Lieutenant Hertzfeld could not comment on where in the house firefighters found the victim.

Property damage was estimated at $50,000, he said. The home, built in 1948, is valued at $84,600, according to the Lucas County Auditor's Web site, which lists Dale Rizor as the home owner.
