A Fort Lauderdale firefighter was in the right place at the right time when a car burst into flames on northbound Interstate 95 on Tuesday but the Toyota could not be saved.

It happened at 6:54 a.m. as Fire Rescue Captain Raymond Cicero was traveling behind the car before it caught fire on the off-ramp from I-95 to Broward Boulevard, fire spokesman Matt Little said.

Cicero and two police officers called dispatchers for help, told the driver to get out and away from the flaming Toyota, and then Cicero helped stop traffic. A fire engine arrived and quickly put the fire out, Little said.

The cause was a mechanical malfunction with the fire starting in the engine compartment, totally destroying the vehicle, he said.

There were no injuries reported.
