FONTANA, Calif. -- Between 80 and 100 firefighters and 20 to 25 engine companies from the Rialto and San Bernardino County fire departments battled a raging industrial fire just north of Jurupa High School and south of Auto Club Speedway, authorities said Saturday.

No injuries were reported.

A county fire spokesman said containment wasn't expected until this morning.

"The wooden pallets are stacked hundreds high," said spokesman Otto Schramm.

Two properties were on fire, a pallet yard and the tractor tire yard, near the intersection of Banana and Slover avenues.

The fire started shortly after 6:30 p.m.

Some residences on Banana south of Slover were evacuated, but no homes were in immediate danger,

Schramm said.

Flames from the burning tires and wood pellets could be seen from the 10 Freeway and the smoke could be seen for miles, Schramm said.

The incident was characterized as a serious fire, and Schramm said extensive property damage was expected.

Early in the evening, chatter on the county Fire Department's radio had firefighters also dealing with the threat of fuel tanks exploding, but that did not happen.

It was not known how the fire started.
