May 27--Hilltown Township police and other emergency responders saved a 1,200-pound horse trapped on top of an in-ground swimming pool cover Thursday.

Police got the emergency call to a home on Highpoint Road off Hilltown Pike (Route 313) at 9:22 a.m.

A brown quarter horse named Donovan had freed himself from his barn stall and ended up on the green pool cover after apparently mistaking it for grass. The cover, tautly secured to a concrete perimeter walkway, held the animal.

Police arrived to find the horse lying on its side and conscious but not moving on the cover, which held a few inches of cold water. Police surmised Donovan had gone into shock and would need to be physically removed -- with a lot of help and quickly.

Firefighters from Hilltown, Silverdale and Chalfont responded. With two large straps and plywood slid under the horse, the group pulled him onto dry ground. Within 45 minutes, Donovan was grazing in a pasture with another horse.
