Vallejo firefighters battled their third marijuana house fire this year after a vacant house with hundreds of plants inside caught fire Monday evening, Acting Battalion Chief George Everett said.
Neighbors alerted authorities to the fire about 6 p.m. after spotting smoke coming out of the vacant single-family house at 108 Monica Place.
More than 300 marijuana plants were found inside. Under a new department policy, firefighters fought the blaze from the outside of the house rather than from the inside.
Everett said previous experience with such fires have led officials to believe they are safer fighting the blaze from the outside as marijuana grow operators have set up booby traps and other devices.
