Driver Allegedly Runs Over Pa. Firefighter's Foot

A woman allegedly drove her car over the foot of one firefighter and narrowly missed a second while they were investigating a natural gas leak call.

A 43-year-old woman allegedly drove her car over the foot of a rookie volunteer firefighter and narrowly missed hitting a second firefighter who was also investigating a natural gas leak call near 291 Park Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. Monday, police and firefighters said.

The driver, who has an address in Sheldon Park Building 44, as well as Youngstown, Ohio, also allegedly hit the rear of a Citizens Hose Company fire engine before being stopped by police.

The unnamed first firefighter was wearing steel-toed boots and wasn't injured, said Harrison police Chief Mike Klein and Citizen's Hose fire Chief Sean Jones. "We all wear steel-toed boots and he was OK," Jones said.

Jones described the man as in his 30s and "in only in his second week of probation."

Jones also said the car caused minor damage to the engine.

But as the woman was backing up to leave, a Harrison Hills firefighter had to jump out of the way, Jones and Klein separately said.

"He would have had broken legs or worse if he hadn't gotten out of the way," Jones said.

Firefighters went to Sheldon Park for a second report of a natural gas leak. Nothing was found.

Klein said the unnamed woman was taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital, Harrison, for a blood test and charges are pending. Police aren't naming the woman until charges are filed.
