NASA, Forest Service Partner to Highlight Fire Science

June 30, 2012
NASA and the U.S. Forest Service have worked together for decades in many areas of research and technology development.

NASA and the U.S. Forest Service signed a Space Act Agreement this week that unites the two agencies in raising awareness about the importance of fire prevention and fire safety, the agencies announced in a joint news release.

The partnership aims to highlight areas of common interest in wildfires, forest and plant growth research and materials science.

The agencies have long worked together.

Dramatic views of smoke, wildfire and the aftermath provide perspective on the effects of wildfire and the value of careful forestry resource management. The images also help firefighters combat fires more effectively and help researchers learn about wildfire behavior and patterns.

NASA's material from June 28 of the wildfires now active in Colorado and Utah can be viewed on NASA's website at http://go.nasa.gov/NXyttH.

The forest service has provided invaluable assistance to NASA during recovery operations following the loss of space shuttle Columbia in the heavily wooded areas of East Texas.
