SUFFOLK, Va. -- An off-duty Suffolk firefighter caused an explosion Friday when he rolled over an unused firework.

Emergency crews were called to the 8900 block of River Crescent in the Cedar Point neighborhood at about 12:15 p.m. in reference to the explosion, according to a City of Suffolk news release. The firefighter was not injured, the release said.

A search uncovered four unexploded devices in the area, the release said. The devices are believed to have been duds from the Crittenden/Hobson/Eclipse Ruritan Club Fourth of July fireworks show.

Virginia State Police helped secure and remove the unexploded fireworks, the release said.

The Suffolk Fire Marshal's Office is asking residents living in that area to use caution when going into their yards and to call 911 if they find an unknown object there.
