WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Firefighters rescued a woman from the roof of a house late Thursday night after a fire sparked in the kitchen.

Crews responded to a call around 11 p.m. at 4918 Pompano Court near Wrightsville Avenue. When firefighters arrived, two civilians were trying to rescue a woman from a second-floor window, said Battalion Chief Tim Smith.

Firefighters were able to quickly raise ladders to the window and help the woman escape, Smith said. She was taken to New Hanover County Regional Medical Center. Smith said the woman, who was not identified, was in stable condition.

No one else was injured in the fire. The fire was in the kitchen, Smith said, but the cause is still under investigation.
