A 3-year-old girl was pulled from a burning apartment building in East Liberty early Tuesday morning and is in critical condition at UPMC Mercy Hospital, detective Michael Burns of the Pittsburgh arson squad said.

Firefighters found the girl alone and unresponsive in the first floor back bedroom of the three-unit building after the fire was reported at 2:52 a.m. The girl's mother had escaped through the front window of the home.

Two residents on the second floor of the apartment escaped uninjured. Residents of the third-floor apartment were at work at the time of the fire, Mr. Burns said.

An Allegheny County emergency dispatcher said the apartment is at 5822 Rippey St. Several cats also were recovered from the building.

Mr. Burns said that at least one firefighter was being treated for injuries. The arson squad is investigating the fire.
