Georgia Firefighters Respond to Blaze at Firehouse
Glynn County firefighters responded just before 8 p.m. Wednesday to a fire at one of their own stations.
Firefighters rushed to Fire Station No. 7, 2911 Lawrence Road on St. Simons Island, after two firefighters inside noticed smoke in the living area.
When they arrived, firefighters found the flame in a small, isolated portion of an attic in the building. They began tearing up a small, roughly 2-foot portion of roof to ventilate the attic and access the fire, according to Glynn County Fire Chief Al Thomas, who responded to the scene.
A cause for the fire had not yet been determined Wednesday, but Thomas said the building had been struck by lightning in June. The hole firefighters made to access the blaze was a few feet from a large communications antenna on the roof.
Engine 4 and Ladder Truck 4, along with an ambulance, responded to the fire. And Engine 7, which is typically stationed at Lawrence Road, returned after being out at another station, Thomas said.
There were no injuries reported at the fire, and the damages could not yet be determined, Thomas said.
An investigation into the cause and extent of the fire was started once the smoke cleared the attic.
