GULFPORT, Miss. -- Two out-of-state men, one of them a firefighter, saved the life of a 6-year-old boy found at the bottom of a hotel pool over the weekend, Gulfport Fire Department officials said.

The boy, from Gonzales, La., was at the hotel with his grandparents and didn't know the men who came to his aid, Battalion Chief Chris Henderson said.

The incident occurred Saturday at the Courtyard by Marriott.

Malcolm Davis of Joliet, Ill., pulled the boy from the bottom of the pool, and Rocky Boland, a firefighter from Greenwood City, S.C., performed CPR until medics arrived. The good Samaritans were guests at the hotel.

"Lifesaving measures performed pool-side save the child's life," Henderson said. "It was awesome."

The boy was taken to Children's Hospital in New Orleans for further treatment and observation.
