Midland firefighters were able to extinguish a house fire on the east side of Midland Tuesday evening before it destroyed the entire residence or could spread to neighboring houses.

When firefighters arrived at the structure fire on the 1400 block of Chestnut Avenue shortly after 8 p.m., the front right room of the residence was fully engulfed, said Brian McGary, interim battalion chief.

Several neighboring houses were evacuated upon first-responders arrival.

Eight units of the Midland Fire Department acted to contain the blaze to the living quarters, with heavy smoke damage throughout. Some minor exterior fire damage of the neighboring house was reported, said Persephone Dakopolos, Midland's public information officer.

It took firefighters 15 minutes to contain the blaze to the front room. McGary added his firefighter's hard work prevented severe damage to the surrounding homes.

The house was unoccupied during the blaze and as of 9 p.m. Tuesday, the owners of the residence had yet to return.

McGary said his department will attempt to locate the homeowners and added that Red Cross would be contacted.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation and no one was injured during the fire.
