Kansas Recycling Plant Fire Causes $1.5M in Damages

Firefighters battled a two-alarm blaze Wednesday that caused $1.5 million in damages at the Deffenbaugh Recycling Co. plant in Kansas City, Kan.

The fire was reported about 4:15 a.m. at the plant at 2404 S. 88th St., which is near Interstate 435 and Kansas 32.

Arriving crews reported heavy fire inside a large steel building that served as a sorting and processing center, said Deputy Chief Craig Duke, a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department.

A second alarm was sounded so firefighters could attack the blaze on both sides of the building, Duke said.

"There was a lot of material stacked high in the building," Duke said.

Crews used heavy equipment to try to cut a path so firefighters could get to fire, he said.

There were no reports of injuries. The cause is under investigation.
