Baltimore Firefighter Rescued After Fall Through Floor

An elderly man has died trying to escape a rowhouse fire in Baltimore, and one firefighter fell through the floor of the house into the basement during the fire.

BALTIMORE (AP) - An elderly man has died trying to escape a rowhouse fire in Baltimore.

Firefighters responded to the blaze around 2:40 a.m. Saturday. They found heavy smoke and flames coming from the first and second floors of the home.

Police identified the victim as 68-year-old Reginald Russell. Fire department spokesman Kevin Cartwright tells The Baltimore Sun the man's body was found just inside the entryway to the house. He had suffered from smoke inhalation and burns.

Cartwright says one firefighter fell through the floor of the house into the basement during the fire. He was found unharmed and was quickly rescued by fellow firefighters.

Fire and police investigators are trying to trying to determine what caused the fire. Foul play is not suspected.
