Sept. 28--ANTIOCH -- A controlled burn scheduled for Friday to reduce the fire hazard on an undeveloped property has been cancelled because of the anticipated heat wave, a fire official said.
The burns, which were to take place on the property near Canada Valley and Vista Grande roads, were expected to begin at 10 a.m.
Temperatures are expected to reach the low 90s over the weekend and spike at 95 on Monday, according to weather service forecasts.
Fire crews want to burn grass on the property as part of an ongoing project to mitigate the fire hazard that exists there, Fire Marshal Lewis Broschard said. The fire district, the city of Antioch and the property owners are cooperating with each other, Broschard said.
The property owners removed debris and abandoned vehicles left behind by illegal dumping and trespassing that occurred on the property, Broschard said.
The fires have removed available fuel from extremely dry grass, a preventive measure designed to slow an uncontrolled wildland fire, Broschard said.
The fire district did not say when it would reschedule the burn.
