Nov. 10--Firefighters found a badly wounded man lying in the left lane of the eastbound Long Island Expressway on Saturday afternoon near Exit 50, Dix Hills Fire Department Chief Tom Magno said.

The man was in shock when firefighters airlifted him to Stony Brook University Hospital shortly after responding to a 1:19 p.m. call, he said. "He had severe trauma all over his body . . . His whole back was road-rashed."

Magno said the man was wearing a T-shirt and blue jeans and appeared to be in his 50s.

"We don't know how he got there," Magno said.

Asked if the man might have jumped from the nearby Bagatelle Road overpass, Magno said, "It's possible. Or he might have jumped out of a car."

A state Department of Transportation website had listed the incident as a motorcycle accident, but firefighters found no motorcycle nearby, he said.

Suffolk County police said the LIE was closed to eastbound traffic near the exit to investigate a motor vehicle accident. The road was reopened at 4:20 p.m., according to the state DOT website.
