Chicago Firefighter Falls Through Floor, Pulled to Safety
Nov. 16--A firefighter fell through the floor while battling a blaze at a vacant building on the South Side this morning and was pulled to safety by other firefighters, officials said.
The firefighter may have suffered a fractured right arm and was taken to the University of Chicago Hospitals, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Kevin MacGregor said. He's in stable condition.
A mayday was called when the firefighter fell through the first floor of the vacant two-story building near Calumet Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive. Other firefighters pulled him out through a basement window, officials said.
The firefighter was bringing a hose into the building when the floor collapsed and he fell into the basement, where the fire was burning, MacGregor said.
The building stretches about half a block, between Calumet Avenue and an alley to the east. The building's first-floor windows were boarded up.
