Dec. 19--HARTFORD -- The city has fired Firefighter Rafael Diaz after an investigation into allegations he was selling drugs.
Criminal charges are still pending against Diaz, who was released without having to post bail. He is due back in court Feb. 7.
Fire Chief Edward Casares Jr. fired Diaz, 37, effective immediately "after a full review of criminal charges brought upon Diaz." He was a firefighter for 14 years and was once recognized for heroism.
He was arrested Aug. 2 after police began investigating allegations that Diaz was selling drugs out of a city firehouse.
An informant purchased ecstasy from Diaz at his house, police said, and on Aug. 2 city, state and federal authorities, along with a SWAT team, raided Diaz's Douglas Street home.
Police said they seized 3.8 ounces of cocaine, 1.4 ounces of marijuana, 1 ounce of mushrooms, 39 ecstasy pills, a loaded .22-caliber pistol and $1,800 in cash. There was no mention in an arrest warrant of undercover buys at a firehouse.
Diaz's lawyer, Michael Georgetti, said the city's decision to fire Diaz is an employment issue that will be taken up by Diaz's union.
