Fast-acting firefighters headed off a potential disaster when flames engulfed a two-story frame house about 1 p.m. Thursday at 86 Dodge St.
Firefighters from Ladder Company 6 stationed on Jefferson Avenue raised a ground ladder to a second-floor window to rescue a man there. Eight adult residents who escaped safely were referred to the American Red Cross for emergency assistance, although none of them was injured, according to a Fire Department report.
The department said the rescued man declined medical treatment.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though it is known to have started on the first floor and spread to the second floor.
Damage was estimated at $90,000 to the building and $40,000 to the contents.
Firefighters said Engine 2 was involved in a minor traffic accident on Virginia Street while responding to the alarm, but there were no injuries.
Charges of failure to yield to an emergency vehicle are pending against the driver of the Jeep, a 47-year-old Buffalo man, Buffalo police said.
