Jan. 06--A few of York County's bravest -- firefighters who had battled flames three hours before -- admitted fear of the critter they rescued from a charred home in Newberry Township Saturday.
About 10 fire companies were dispatched around 6 a.m. to the structure in the 1100 block of Cly Road.
About three hours later, firefighters salvaged a glass terrarium from the rubble.
Inside it was a living 4-foot-long python that had a few men in uniform shaking their heads.
Along with the slithering reptile, the residents of the home -- five adults and one child -- were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
The fire started on the second floor of the home, which was deemed a total loss, said Fred Sanders, Goldsboro Fire Company chief.
Sanders said the fire was likely caused by a space heater.
One person, he said, was transported to the hospital for a medical issue unrelated to the fire.
Joey Seitz, a neighbor, said he woke up to the sound of fire trucks after the flames had been put out.
"We're worried about their dogs," Seitz said. "They have two in the backyard."
Cecil Henderson has lived on Cly Road since 1977. He said he didn't know much about his neighbors, who were unavailable for comment Saturday.
The family, he said, moved from a nearby trailer park several years ago.
"The house was gutted. All I saw was smoke," he said. "I got up a little after 6. I saw an ambulance in my one driveway and a fire truck in the other."
