Jan. 20--PORTSMOUTH -- A firefighter was evaluated for minor injuries after a city ambulance rear-ended a vehicle on Portsmouth Avenue early Friday afternoon.
Police Sgt. Christopher Roth said the accident occurred around 12:56 p.m. Friday, in the area of Liberty Mutual. He said the ambulance was traveling behind a car, which stopped at a crosswalk, then kept driving, and then stopped at a second crosswalk, at which point the front of the ambulance collided with the back of the car in front of it.
Roth said the driver of the ambulance did not expect the vehicle to stop the second time.
The rear bumper of the vehicle, and the front bumper of the ambulance, were damaged in the accident.
One firefighter who was in the back of the ambulance was evaluated for minor injuries at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
At the time of the accident, the ambulance did not have sirens on, and was not transporting a patient, said Roth.
The ambulance involved was that of the Portsmouth Fire Department.
