A suspicious fire at at an abandoned ore dock on Allouez Bay was allowed to burn as it was in a remote area and posed no hazard to any other structure.

Feb. 09--The Superior Fire Department planned to let timbers and a building that are part of an abandoned ore dock on Allouez Bay burn into the night, it reported Friday night.

The fire at 3701 E. Itasca was believed to be contained to the structure and didn't pose a hazard to the area, the department reported. Fire crews deemed it too dangerous to try and scale the structure to get to the fire that is 100 feet in the air. The building atop the dock was checked for any people and was cleared.

Superior firefighters consulted with BNSF Railway, owner of the property, and it agreed to let the fire burn.

"With no lives or valuable property in danger, this is one of the rare cases where it made more sense to do nothing," said Battalion Chief Vern Johnson.

The fire is considered suspicious considering the remote location.
