Feb. 23--Firefighters responded Friday afternoon to a structure fire at an Athens Borough residence.
The Protection Hose Company and Athens Township Volunteer Fire Company were called to the reported structure fire at 209 South St. at about 3:30 p.m. Friday. Smoke filled the rear of the house and was seen coming out of second-floor and attic windows. Firefighters had the fire under control at about 4 p.m.
Two people were at home at the time of the residence and were able to escape. Emergency personnel carried tanks believed to contain pet snakes out of the home.
Greater Valley EMS transported an Athens Borough firefighter to Robert Packer Hospital from the scene. The firefighter's identity or the extent of his injuries were unknown Friday night; however, he was able to walk from the house to a stretcher with limited assistance.
Firefighters remained at the scene through Friday evening.
