March 25--About half-dozen residents of an east Macon nursing home were taken to the hospital to be checked for smoke inhalation in an early morning fire.
Macon-Bibb County firefighters were called to the Rosewood Nursing Center at 2795 Finney Circle at about 2:30 a.m. Monday, said Chief Marvin Riggins.
Smoke was coming from an heating and air conditioning utility room in the facility and pouring through the vents in one of the wings, Riggins said.
About 90 residents were evacuated safely from the nursing facility off Millerfield Road.
At least one east person was checked for stress during the ordeal.
Fire investigator Lt. Ellen Kicklighter said she believes the fire started in one of the heating units, but would be able to tell more once she inspects the building in daylight.
Firefighters were able to put out the small blaze before it spread to other parts of the building.
No one was seriously hurt, Riggins said, and he commended the staff for their efficient handling of the evacuation.
About 10 people in the east wing had to be transferred to other facilities because of the water damage, Riggins said.
