SILVER SPRING, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County firefighters are on the scene of a two-alarm blaze in Silver Spring this Tuesday morning.
Beth Anne Nesselt, spokeswoman for the department, says dispatchers received a report of a fire at 415 Silver Spring Avenue shortly before 7:00 a.m. Once firefighters arrived on scene they found flames shooting from the top floor of a 6-story apartment building. A request for a second alarm was transmitted shortly after arrival.
Officials say several people were rescued from the apartment building as others evacuated. Approximately seven to eight people were transported from the scene to area hospitals, Nesselt said. According to Assistant Chief Scott Graham, four of the victims suffered serious injuries, including two elderly men who were burned.
The evacuated residents have taken refuge inside Ride-On buses that were called to the scene for temporary shelter. Residents are expected to be allowed back inside in a couple hours.
Most of the damage appears to be concentrated within two 6th floor apartments.
The incident is under investigation by Montgomery County Fire Marshals.
Right now Silver Spring Avenue is closed between Piney Branch Road and Nolte Avenue to allow space for fire equipment.
